The Promises of God

“I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I will give thanks to your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness, because your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.”

– Psalm 138:2

Thoughts:
When David Livingstone had to pass through the most dangerous country of the fierce native chief Mburuma and decide whether to furtively sneak through at night or go by day and risk being killed, he staked his life on the promise of Jesus’ presence in Matthew 28:19-20: “Go and make disciples of all the nations. . . . And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” He wrote in his journal, “[I]t is the word of a Gentleman of the most sacred and strictest honor, so there’s an end on it!” Livingstone knew that God backs up his promises with all the honor of his name, so he proceeded in broad daylight, trusting in his Savior’s promise. God fulfilled his Word, and Livingstone made the crossing safely because the Lord Jesus was beside him, just as he said he would be. God’s promises are just as true and alive today for those who will pray them, trust them, stand on them, and walk in them.

Prayer:
THANK YOU, FATHER, for backing your promises by all the honor of your name. It is a mighty and powerful and trustworthy name! I give thanks to you for your unfailing love and faithfulness. Help me to move forward under your direction in the light of your unfailing and precious promises.

“GOD MAKES A PROMISE; FAITH BELIEVES IT, HOPE ANTICIPATES IT, PATIENCE QUIETLY AWAITS IT.”

Have you spent much time talking to God today?

I believed in you, so I prayed, “I am deeply troubled, Lord.”

– Psalm 116:10

Thoughts:
God has called us to a life of prayer, of constant and ongoing communication with him, and has purposed that we would turn to him in our troubles. That the almighty, all-powerful Lord wants to hear our needs and hurts is great news. But the fact that he not only hears our prayers but also intervenes and delights in showing us his loving-kindness and doing wonderful things in response to our petitions makes prayer a truly amazing thing. Through prayer, everything can change—starting with our own hearts and lives—and even when we feel most helpless or are most troubled, God can infuse the worst situations with his light and grace. When we pray, the impossible becomes possible, and the powers of darkness are dispersed. No wonder Satan tries every scheme to keep us from praying! But because we believe in God and his limitless power, we can take our most honest concerns and feelings to him and know that he will hear us.

Prayer:
LORD, when I am troubled, help me to run to you the way little children run to their fathers when they don’t know what to do or where to go. Increase my belief in your fatherly heart and your tenderness toward me, and increase my faith in the power of prayer.

“IT IS BY PRAYER THAT WE COUPLE THE POWERS OF HEAVEN TO OUR HELPLESSNESS, THE POWERS WHICH CAN TURN WATER INTO WINE AND REMOVE MOUNTAINS IN OUR OWN LIFE AND IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS, THE POWER WHICH CAN AWAKEN THOSE WHO SLEEP IN SIN AND RAISE UP THE DEAD, THE POWERS WHICH CAN CAPTURE STRONGHOLDS AND MAKE THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE.”
Ole Hallesby (1879–1961)
